هذا تعليق محمد حسنين هيكل ان عبد الحكيم عامر انه كان ضد تأميم قناة السويس وحذر عبدالناصر باصرار وإن الجيش غير مستعد لكن عبدالناصر اصر٠ ونحن نعلم بعد ذلك بالهزيمه الكبرى عام ١٩٥٦ الجيش فلم يكن أكثر حظًا من الحكومة، حيث أخفى عبد الناصر عنه الخبر أيضًا، لسابق معرفته باعتراض عبد الحكيم عامر على قرار التأميم في مناقشات سابقة بينهما، حيث كان يفضل الأخير الضغط على الشركة لزيادة حصة مصر من دخلها السنوي دون تصعيد، وبحسب رواية عبد اللطيف البغدادي، عضو مجلس قيادة الثورة، في مذكراته، فإن عبد الناصر أبلغ عامر بالقرار وهما في طريقهما إلى الإسكندرية بالقطار لإلقاء خطبة التأميم. وبحسب شهادة «صلاح نصر»، ألقى عامر اللوم على عبد الناصر لعدم مشاركته في اتخاذ القرار، حيث إنه قائد عام القوات المسلحة، وتجب استشارته لمعرفة إذا ما كان الجيش قادرًا على حماية القرار أم لا. الهزيمه الكبرى عام ١٩٥٦
